VMware ESX Backup for the Growing Business

Posted on 17. Oct, 2010

Businesses decide to add virtualization for a variety of reasons, in addition to the fact that it’s become necessary to keep up with growing data storage requirements, hardware needs, and space requirements. Whenever a VMware virtual machine is installed, a business owner should also install a VMware ESX backup system. There is no reason to take advantage of the benefits of virtualization if you’re not willing to protect your investment.

Virtual machines are compatible with all standard computers or servers. In addition, they run independently of the hardware, allowing multiple virtual machines to run on the same server simultaneously. Virtual machines act like a regular physical computer. Virtual machines run all the same software and applications that a physical computer runs. Due to virtual machines operating independently of each other and the server, when one machine crashes, that does not necessarily mean the others will as well. This security is one of the major benefits of virtualization.

Virtual machines contain everything necessary to operate like a computer and are extremely portable. You can essentially move a virtual machine from one location to another like you move a file. Because they run independently of the underlying hardware, virtual machines are able to run operating systems that are not compatible with the server’s system. In addition, each virtual machine on one server can run a different operating system. Virtual infrastructures allow sharing of critical applications, streamline development, and allow simple monitoring and management of usage, servers and workstations.

Virtual Machine Backup

When you build this infrastructure with multiple virtual machines, multiple storage devices, and several host servers, the threat of a system failure still exists. To protect your files, datacenters, virtual machines, and servers, VMware ESX backup software is a necessity. Special software for VMware ESX backup is available on the Internet. It’s important to find one that has a short downtime for recovery, data verification, quick backup and restoration, and is cost effective.

Things that should be backed up include copies of each virtual machine, files on the ESX server, and possibly the server service console, or at least certain components of it. To back up virtual disk files, the virtual machine needs to be powered off, or some other means of ensuring that data capture done. This can include taking a snapshot of the virtual machine which captures all new writes and allows safe back up of the machine.
